Rafting and Kayaking

Many people enjoying taking their kayaks on whitewater rafting trips. Instead of traditional tubes, kayaks are used and offer a great amount of versatility on the water. Whitewater rafting via kayak can be done on a slower, more peaceful moving water to very demanding or dangerous rapids.

The kayak used in traditional whitewater rafting is quite different than what one would usually use on the open sea. It's made of a more durable plastic which helps protect the kayak in the event it's scratched on a rock during travel. Their length can range anywhere from 5 feet to 12 feet, depending on your personal tastes.

There are different types of whitewater rafting. River running is kayaking down a river to enjoy its view. It includes short day trips to multi-day excursions. Often extra camping gear is towed behind in a gear-toting raft. It's a great way for those who are new to kayaking and rafting to get their feet wet, so to speak. The calmer waterways act as training to fledgling rafters.

Creeking involves very technical and difficult rapids which often include running ledges, waterfalls and slides. Many of these rives are smaller and tighter, which requires quicker reflexes and better maneuvering than a calmer body of water. Only well trained rafters should attempt creeking.

Whatever your skill level, you'll want to ensure you have the right rafting gear for kayaking on whitewater rapids. A strong paddle is a definite must to avoid equipment failure on the water. Also, a buoyancy aid, personal floatation device, helmet and spraydeck are essential for the kayaker. You'll also want to pack a rope, knife and a safety whistle. Some also wear nose clips since flipping the kayak is often inevitable.

Kayaking is an excellent way to enjoy nature's beauty. When rafting on whitewater rapids you can choose the water that's right for your skill level, allowing you to have either a leisurely trip down a river or to emerge out of your comfort zone.
