When you plan a trip, there are of course many different combinations of kayaking gear that you can take with you. Depending on where you'll be and what type of water you'll be maneuvering on, you'll want to ensure that your gear matches your environment. Being aptly prepared for your trip will provide maximum safety and ensure a comfortable and secure journey for you and anyone else who's traveling with you.
Assuming you have the correct kayak and paddle chosen for your excursion, we'll move forward and discuss the carry on gear you'll need to make this trip happen. All of the items listed are just suggestions, as you may or may not want to bring certain pieces of gear with you. Even so, you may want to consider having the following items: a life vest, pump (for inflatable kayaks), board shorts, floatation device, helmet (if kayaking on the ocean or maneuvering rocky waters), bailing buckets, and cords for strapping gear to the top of your kayak. Many of these items are self-explanatory in nature.
If you're using an inflatable kayak, you'll want to pack a repair kit that has patching material, duct tape, glue (with brush to apply it), dental floss and carpet needle (to repair bad tears), and scissors. If your kayak has a hardshell frame, you'll want the following in your repair kit: tools, such as a vice grip, pliers, screwdriver, wrench, hammer, bits and a small saw. Also pack pipe clamps, bailing wire and extra screws, bolts, nuts, etc.
You may also want to pack a first aid kit, changes of clothes, food and water, especially if you'll be kayaking for more than an afternoon. You also can't go wrong with bringing a compass, map, lantern, and a rescue kit.
Kayaking is a great way to spend an afternoon or even days on the water. But in order to be safe and secure, packing the right kayaking gear is essential. Whether you bring all of these items or just a few, you'll want to ensure you're well prepared for anything that can occur.
